Chapter 8

Edward woke up and stretched and then recalled the reason why he shouldn’t be able to stretch fully. Where was Jamie? Probably freaked out over something Edward had said or done. Great. Swinging his legs over the side of the bed, he sat up and scrubbed at his eyes. He was disappointed that he had been loved and left. Never mind. Seeing Jamie was going to be awkward from now on but…

Then he saw the note on Jamie’s pillow.

“Went for coffee. Meet you in the kitchens.”

A goofy smile spread over his face. Coffee with a hot, sexy ex-Marine sounded like his idea of heaven. He grabbed a shower and then stood at his small closet wondering what exactly the well-dressed island man wore to the morning-after-the-night-before meeting with a new lover. Settling on a clean pair of black tailored pants and a fresh white shirt, he dressed quickly. He spent as little time as possible taming his hair and then hurried to the main house and the kitchens. He didn’t immediately find Jamie but Dominiq handed him two mugs of heaven in a cup and told him that Jamie was in the walk-in larder area.

Edward went to find him and what he saw had him standing stock still at the door to the large larder room. In the middle of the room sat a rectangular table and all the makings of the cake for the wedding. Jamie was hunched over the small parts that would go to making up the four-tier tower of white that was on the picture to his side. Dominiq had prepared the cakes, iced them in the pure white, and created the strong pillars that would support the layers. The whole thing was to be finished off with flowers, which were currently in the chiller awaiting placement at the last moment.

“Hey,” Edward said gently. He didn’t want to surprise Jamie if the other man was deep in concentration. Jamie looked up at him and then reached out with a grateful expression on his face for the coffee. Edward handed it to him and was dragged down for a heated kiss.

“Morning,” Jamie said. He sounded fresh and not at all sleepy.

“What are you doing?” Edward asked. However much he wanted to be new-not-anal-about-details Edward, he couldn’t push away the nerves at seeing Jamie anywhere near his precious cake.

“Building the cake,” Jamie said.

“Can you do that?” Don’t let him know you doubt him. Don’t go all enraged wedding planner on him.

“All this is, this cake building, is a form of engineering. No different from building a lookout post in the desert. All this cake will be is an engineering triumph over gravity.” Jamie grinned and the smile lit up his face. Edward couldn’t believe he was seeing Jamie in a whole set of interlinked clichés. But time did stop, and he did want to steal every moment of it with Jamie.

“Okay,” he finally said.

“Thank you for last night,” Jamie said gently. “I don’t often get those dreams, but when I do, I sometimes can’t get myself out of them.
